Learn About Cast Polypropylene Properties

CPP film is cast polypropylene that is manufactured by an extrusion process of a molten polypropylene web through a slot die onto a revolving cast chill roll. This roller may be mirror finished for smooth films or surface textured for embossed films. The resulting films vary in thickness which makes CPP film ideal for a range of polymer applications.

What are the advantages of cast polypropylene?

Cast polypropylene (CPP) film is a versatile material that is suitable for many different applications. CPP film has a clear advantage over BOPP and polyethylene for plastic manufacturing.
  • Lowest density - highest yield of any polymer film
  • An excellent heat seal layer for retort or steam sterilization applications and other flexible packaging multi-layer laminations
  • Environmentally inert
  • Acid free
  • Highly non-polar
  • Excellent optics
  • Moderate WVTR barrier
  • Good grease/oil barrier
  • Excellent resistance to corrosive chemicals
  • Provides a soft hand without the use of plasticizers
  • Excellent toughness and abrasion resistance
  • Can be thermally or ultrasonically sealed
  • Available in a variety of colors and embossed patterns
  • Natural living hinge properties

CPP Film Properties vs. BOPP

CPP film is not a Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (aka: BOPP or OPP). CPP is mildly oriented in the machine direction only. Depending upon the grade of PP resin, the film can be torn in the machine direction but is extremely resistant to cross directional tear, even when notched. BOPP, on the other hand, is highly oriented in both the machine and cross directions and when notched, tears easily in both directions.

In comparison, CPP is soft like polyethylene (PE) or PVC. BOPP is stiff and crinkly. CPP does not dead-fold well and has a natural living hinge. BOPP, on the other hand, has excellent dead-fold characteristics. Most BOPP films - are fractional gauges of less than 1 mil while CPP films are 1 mil or thicker. BOPP films do not heat seal well without specialty heat seal coatings, while CPP films can be thermally or ultrasonically sealed without any specialty coatings. BOPP films have better barrier properties than CPP; however, CPP has better barrier properties than most polyethylene’s and PVC films.
